William Kentridge’s studio is a space for experimentation, for play — a place where, in his own phrase, the less good idea is actively pursued. Anatomy of the Studio is written by the artist himself: a reflection on the inner workings of that space, with images drawn from the making of the work under discussion. The book is designed primarily to be read; images follow the text rather than lead it, keeping attention on Kentridge’s thought. Typography carries the same logic. Scala Serif sets the body — measured, effortlessly legible — while Scala Sans Condensed Bold heads each section. The same face, set in red, carries a series of rubrics: phrases from the studio that recur across Kentridge’s work, breaking the body text and introducing a deliberate restlessness into the reading. Printed 4×4 on Munken Premium Cream 100gsm, with an uncoated 350gsm soft cover printed double-sided with flaps. The book has been produced in multiple language editions, each retaining the original design template.
