Manhattan Project—Photographs by Jan Staller

Jan Staller’s Manhattan Project turns construction materials from Manhattan’s building boom into something unexpected: reductive, abstract compositions that echo painting, drawing and sculpture while remaining distinctly photographic. Reading this work meant reading the tension between the industrial and the aesthetic — and the book is designed to hold that tension. A landscape format accommodates the variety of image sizes across the series, and a fine rule frames each photograph, drawing attention to the differences in format rather than smoothing them over. A spot varnish reinforces this, marking the images as objects of attention. The display face is a Leroy lettering font drawn from old architectural blueprints — a direct reference to the construction sites at the heart of the work; Fakt Pro Blond carries the body text. Printed 4×4 on Magno Volume 150gsm with a spot UV gloss varnish, endpapers printed 2×2 colors on Wibalin Natural.
