Doctrines of Affection is written by William Kentridge as a reflection on his practice in theatre and opera — tracing how intuitions, objects and connections migrate from a table-top model in the studio to opera houses and exhibition spaces around the world. Like Anatomy of the Studio, the book is designed primarily to be read: images accompany the text without competing with it. Quotations are set in red and markedly indented, disrupting the page and introducing a rhythm that echoes the theatrical dynamics of the subject. The cover is set in Scala Sans Condensed; inside, the book moves exclusively to Scala Serif — its warmth and legibility well suited to the intimacy of Kentridge’s writing and to the theatrical tradition he reflects upon. Printed 4×4 colors on Munken Premium Cream 100gsm, with an uncoated 350gsm soft cover, printed double-sided with flaps.
