The paintings of Guyanese artist Aubrey Williams (1926–1990) evoke elemental forces — earth, fire, cataclysm — while simultaneously bearing witness to the deep interconnections linking Caribbean, British and Atlantic histories across colonial and postcolonial eras. This is the first comprehensive exploration of his work, and reading it meant understanding how much it demands of the design: extensive scholarly essays, a rich archive of personal photographs, exhibition flyers and press cuttings, and Williams’s paintings distributed throughout rather than gathered into sections. The typographic choices reach into mid-century British and European modernism: Franklin Gothic for headings, its weight carrying resonances of the postwar period; Lector, a contemporary revival of a historical German serif developed for art book publishing, for the body text. Printed 4×4 plus one Pantone on Magno Volume 150gsm, with Sirio Colour Black endpapers, a hard cover wrapped in Sirio Color Orange, black hot foil on cover and spine, and an artwork inset into the front.
