Single channel video (2017)
Call to an unknown ship is a video essay, shot in the format of a book. The essay takes as its starting point Philip Hoffman’s film ?O, Zoo!, an experimental documentary shot in the Netherlands in 1985, about the making of Peter Greenaway’s film A Zed and Two Noughts, a fiction film shot predominantly at the Rotterdam Zoo, also in 1985. A chance encounter with Hoffman’s film during an Internet search for Marcel Duchamp’s final work Etant Donnes sets the narrative in motion. Adopting the technique of association that is central to Hoffman’s film, Call to an unknown ship is an open-ended search for something that is lost. Experimental in both form and narrative, the video is a close reading of Hoffman’s ?O, Zoo! and a reflection of how knowledge is shaped and produced by the Internet and search.
