In this book on the work of Breyten Breytenbach, Saayman argues that writing and painting form two manifestations of one and the same creative force in Breytenbach’s ouevre. A Monologue in Two Voices brings important new insights to our understanding of the work of a major South African artist, arguing for a re-evaluation of the relationship between text and image throughout Breytenbach’s oeuvre.Sandra Saayman is senior lecturer in South African literature and culture studies at the University of Réunion Island, and senior research fellow at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Johannesburg. She obtained a PhD in literature in 2003 at the University of Poitiers, France, for a thesis entitled Texte et image: la littérature de prison de Breyten Breytenbach. Her research focuses on the role of the visual arts in literary texts and, more generally, on the relationship between text and image in the public space.
